How to Become a UGC Creator With No Experience
No followers, no portfolio, no problem. Here's exactly how to start making UGC content for brands and land your first paid collab.
You don't need followers to get paid for content
This is the part most people get wrong: UGC (user-generated content) creation isn't about how many people follow you — it's about whether you can make a video or photo that looks like it belongs in someone's feed, not an ad. Brands hire UGC creators to make that raw, native-feeling content and then run it as paid ads or post it themselves. Your own follower count is basically irrelevant. What matters is your camera work, your voice on camera, and whether you can follow a brief.
That's genuinely good news if you're starting from zero. You can start today with a phone, a ring light if you have one (not required), and a product you already use.
Step 1: Pick 2-3 content niches you can talk about credibly
Brands book creators by niche — beauty, food, tech, parenting, fitness, travel, finance, and so on. Pick categories where you'd actually be a believable customer. If you already talk about skincare with friends or you're the person your group chat asks for restaurant recommendations, that's your niche.
Step 2: Film 3-5 sample videos before anyone asks you to
This is the single biggest unlock. Don't wait for a brand deal to start filming — make your own sample UGC videos using products you already own. Aim for the formats brands actually buy:
- An unboxing/first-impression video (15-30 seconds)
- A "get ready with me" or routine video that naturally features a product
- A straight-to-camera testimonial/review (30-45 seconds)
- A problem/solution style ad ("I used to struggle with X, then I tried Y")
These four clips become your demo reel. This is what gets you booked — not a big following.
Step 3: Build a one-page portfolio
You don't need a website. A Google Drive folder or a simple portfolio page with your best 4-5 clips, your niches, and your contact info is enough to start.
Step 4: Get in front of agencies and brands actively looking for creators
This is where most beginners stall — they make good content and then have nowhere to send it. Influencer and UGC agencies exist specifically to match creators like you with brands that are already looking to book UGC content, so you don't have to cold-pitch brands one by one.
