Should You Sign With an Influencer Talent Agency?
Not every creator needs an agency — but the right one changes what kind of brand deals you get access to. Here's how to tell if it's worth it.
What an agency actually does that you can't easily do alone
A good talent or creator agency doesn't just "find you deals" — it gets you into brand briefs you'd likely never see on your own, negotiates rates and usage rights on your behalf, and handles the unglamorous parts (contracts, deliverable timelines, revisions) so you can focus on making content instead of chasing invoices.
The casting question most creators never ask
Many agencies select creators primarily by follower count, running through the same shortlist of accounts for every brief. Ask how an agency actually casts campaigns — agencies with a background in casting for film and TV, for example, tend to look at fit, on-camera presence, and story first, which usually means access to a wider and more varied range of brand briefs, not just the biggest-name campaigns.
Questions worth asking before you sign anything
- How do you select which creators go up for which brief?
- Do you take a percentage of my rate, and is it disclosed upfront?
- Do you help negotiate usage rights, or only the base fee?
- What happens if I want to work directly with a brand I already have a relationship with?
- Is there a minimum commitment period or exclusivity clause?
You don't need to be signed to start working with an agency
Many agencies work with creators on a per-campaign, non-exclusive basis rather than a locked-in contract — applying costs you nothing and lets you see what kind of briefs come your way before deciding on anything longer-term.
