5 Red Flags of a Bad Influencer or UGC Agency

Published:

Not every agency has your interests in mind. Here are 5 warning signs to watch for — and what a genuinely creator-first agency actually looks like.

1. They can't explain how they'll actually cast you

If an agency's answer to "how do you decide which creators go up for which brief" is vague or entirely about follower count, that's worth noting. A clear casting process — one that looks at fit, tone, and story rather than just reach — usually means you're more than a number on a spreadsheet.

2. Payment terms are unclear or verbal-only

Rates, timelines, usage rights, and any cut the agency takes should be in writing before you produce anything. An agency that's cagey about any of these, or asks you to "just trust the process," is a real warning sign.

3. They push you toward exclusivity immediately

Some legitimate agencies do use exclusivity, but if you're asked to sign an exclusive, long-term contract before you've even worked together once, ask why — a confident agency can usually earn exclusivity through results first.

4. There's no real feedback loop after a campaign

Good agencies tell you how a campaign performed and what to adjust next time — that's how you actually improve and earn better briefs. If every campaign is a black box with no follow-up, you're not being developed, you're being used once.

5. You're always the last one to find out about changes

Brief changes, delayed payments, or shifted deliverables happen — but you should hear about them directly and promptly, not discover them after the fact. Communication quality is usually the clearest early signal of how an agency will actually treat you long-term.

What a good one looks like instead

A good agency treats casting like a real creative decision, not a follower-count lookup; puts terms in writing; gives you a path from a one-off campaign to a longer-term partnership if the fit is right; and tells you honestly when a brief isn't a match for you instead of pushing you into it anyway.
